You won't often read an engagement story like this one! Mother and daughter duo - Fiona and Ariana, enjoyed a double celebration when they both got engaged to their partners, Peter and Daithi, last September! Plenty of parties, planning and preparations have ensued for the two couples since then!
Ariana touched base with the Cork Weddings Magazine team recently to share her engagement story and to discuss how she and her Mom are both organizing their dream Weddings.
Firstly, congratulations to everybody on your recent engagements! Exciting times ahead. Ariana, tell us how did you and Daithi meet?
"I met Daithi at work actually! And we still work together to this day! People always ask, 'How in God's name can you work together?' I suppose we met at work so it’s all we know really! I knew after two weeks that I was going to spend the rest of my life with him. We complement each other so well, he’s literally my best friend."
How did he propose?
"We got engaged on the 17/09/18. It was Daithi's birthday weekend so he wanted to go away for a night. I’m always the 'planner' so he wanted to plan it (for once). He kept telling me not to ask for any hints because it would ruin the surprise.. Yes I’m that girlfriend who always tries to guess everything. Don’t get me wrong I do LOVE surprises - I’m just super nosy.
We arrived at Cottages for Couples in Skibbereen. I was so excited as I'd only said it to my girlfriends the week before that I'd never been there and would love to go. We went out for a beautiful meal in The Church restaurant. It was a lovely, relaxing evening.
We returned to the cottage in the middle of a massive storm. Daithi asked me to open the door so he could get some groceries from the car. When I opened the door, there were candles lighting everywhere. I thought I had walked into the wrong cottage and was going to leave. When I turned around, Daithi was down on one knee asking me to marry him. There was even a big banner with 'Will you marry me?' written on it on the wall but of course I totally missed it. I was more worried about a fire starting from all the candles! Daithi had met the cottage owner prior to our stay and they went all out to set up this romantic surprise!"
Who chose the ring?
"Daithi chose it and I absolutely love it. It's princess cut with side diamonds set in a beautiful band."
Have you started wedding planning yet?
"I started planning the minute I got engaged. As a young girl, I always imagined my dream wedding. We are getting married in Portugal and we're heading over in a few weeks to set the date and to arrange a few things. We can't wait!"
Could you believe it when you and your Mom got engaged at the same time?
"It was the craziest thing and so surreal! And the guys had it planned with months!! Kudos to them keeping such a secret. Wedding planning with my Mom! Not many people get to experience such a thing. It’s such a happy and wonderful time in both our lives."
Will you be having a joint wedding celebration or are you keeping it separate?
"We will keep it separate. We both want completely different days, styles and ceremonies. Mom will be having 200 + guests, however, I’m having a small and intimate affair. Our taste is completely different. My Mom is having her wedding this November. She's having a gold and burgundy colour scheme, which will be perfect as it's so close to Christmas. I'm going for more of a boho/rustic theme with a relaxed and romantic setting. Nothing formal for me - just a good time with good people."
What about your dresses?
"My Mom will be wearing a dark burgundy off-the-shoulder ball gown. It's absolutely beautiful and very different! As for me - I'm keeping with the boho feels."
What's the best thing about wedding planning with your Mom?
"Me and my Mom are great friends. The older I got, the closer we grew. We are so alike, it’s crazy! I cannot believe we are both helping each other plan the most amazing weddings. I’m so lucky and thankful to be experiencing this. There are some very exciting (and busy) times ahead for us both - and for the guys too of course!"
One of THE cutest engagement stories we've heard to date! Hope you all have wonderful weddings and best wishes for the future x
