When choosing your engagement ring, it's important to take diamond shape and the four Cs in to account. Diamonds come in a variety of shapes and different diamond shapes will suit different people. The 4 Cs ensure that you're buying a quality diamond. Your jeweller will help you do this by weighing up; the Carat, Cut, Clarity and Colour of your diamond. While to the untrained eye, a diamond might be just a diamond - the clearer and whiter the diamond and the quality of the cut will add value to your ring.
The carat measures the weight of the diamond - not it's actual 'size'. 1 carat equals .2 grams.
The cut refers not to the shape but to the reflective quality of the diamond. The more light that reflects off your diamond, the better the quality. When cut properly, light will reflect upwards from the centre of your ring to create dazzling sparkle.
Diamonds contain naturally occurring marks, or blemishes, called inclusions. More often then not, these will be invisible to the naked eye but nonetheless their size and location will affect the diamond's clarity grade. The less inclusions a diamond has, the more expensive it will be.
Diamonds are graded on a colour scale from D (white/colourless) to Z (light yellow). The closer a diamond is to being colourless, the more expensive it will be. Diamonds in the D, E, F categories are considered the best ones to buy.
Diamonds come in lots of different shapes and sizes. From oval to emerald, there's a shape to suit all fingers. There is a symbolism to ring shape too. Here's what they say about some of the popular choices:
Round - The wearer of a round ring is traditional and knows what will stand the test of time. Comprised of 58 facets, the round ring is designed for maximum sparkle and can be customised by setting as a halo or by adorning with additional diamonds.
Princess - The person who wear a princess cut ring is anchored in tradition but is very open to change. These people are known to look to different influences to gain a better understanding of the world.
Emerald - This dramatic ring shape is one of our favourites. Its vintage design appeals to someone who values tradition, yet has the confidence to make a statement.
Marquise - This ring shape is for a true romantic. Originating in France, this unique diamond shape was created when King Louis XIV requested a new diamond to be cut for the woman he loved.
Cushion Cut - Cushion cuts are very in vogue at the moment, with the Great Gatsby showcasing 1920's style. These pretty rings exude opulence and should be worn by real romantics who value vintage design.
